Rin had scouted three exits, memorized the guard rotation that didn't exist, and packed a emergency inhaler he'd never once needed before he even sat down at the main Buddhist temple to eat his chicken, because a former samurai does not get caught slipping, not even during lunch. Naturally the degens rolled up anyway, a whole floor of them, ringing him in on the temple steps like he was a rug about to get pulled, and for one terrible heartbeat every drill he'd ever drilled screamed run, brace, something. Instead he just kept chewing, grease on his knuckles, grin spreading wide as the encirclement itself, because being surrounded while stuffing his face turned out to be the first thing all week that didn't require a contingency plan. Some ronin part of him, the part that used to sleep with one eye open for real threats, quietly filed this under failure of vigilance; the rest of him filed it under best lunch of the year. He told himself tomorrow he'd be sharp again, blade-honed and unbothered, right after he finished this last thigh, and maybe the one after that, discipline patiently waiting its turn like everything else in his life lately.
