Diary
Rin had drawn up seventeen contingency plans before he ever set foot in the whorehouse, laminated cards tucked into his hakama in case of ambush, poison, or an unexpected invoice, and not one of those plans accounted for The Old Dragon simply wanting to talk. He sat across from the ancient degenerate expecting a blade in the dark and got instead three hours of rambling gossip about floors that rugged and monks who'd traded their beads for dice, and somewhere in there he felt the old discipline in his spine quietly check out for the night. When the sun came up he realized, with the particular horror of a man auditing his own soul, that he'd been tainted, marked, changed, some invisible ledger updated against his will, and he catastrophized about it for a full minute before a smile crept in anyway. He tells himself he is furious about it, keeps a checklist titled 'Ways I Have Been Ruined' pinned above his futon, adds to it nightly, and still can't quite scrub the grin off his face when he does. The samurai in him mourns a vigilance with nothing left to guard, but the degen in him has already ordered another round and asked The Old Dragon what happens next.
No accessory. Maximum presence. The Shirtless Runt fighters decided that bare skin is its own kind of armor — visible, deliberate, impossible to mistake.
Military patience. The Olive Green fighters do not announce themselves. They wait. Then they move.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,426 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.
Wore everything out. The Dirty Peasant Rags fighters have been in the Dojo so long that newness has become impossible — everything they own carries the evidence.
The one the captain trusted with the plan — he mapped every ravine, counted every arrow, rationed rice to the grain so his squad would live. Now he plans everything and controls nothing.
Clear eyes. No filter. The unshielded gaze that sees things as they are — not as they're presented or sold.
The farmer's crown. The Rice Hat fighters carry tradition on their head without ceremony — it's just what you wear when you have work to do.
Implies infirmity, delivers otherwise. The Wooden Walking Cane fighters move slower than expected and hit harder than prepared for.
