Diary
Stresshead Rin had gone into the Dojo gardens with a checklist, three backup checklists, and a mushroom stem he was almost certain was the safe kind, because that is how a former samurai handles recreational chaos, with contingency plans. Halfway into the trip the koi pond started speaking in candlestick patterns and Rin, sweating through his gi, swore he saw a hidden gem coin glowing between the roots of the old pine, floor price rising with every heartbeat he could not slow down. He dug it up with his bare hands, certain he had aped into the future itself, certain also that he was about to be rugged by the universe, by his own katana, by a raccoon he was now negotiating a vesting schedule with. By sunrise, coin clutched, sanity loosely rented, he announced he would write a book about the whole ordeal, a discipline project, structure, chapters, a table of contents that would finally prove he could still be a disciplined man. He has since rewritten the outline eleven times, added a chapter on breathing exercises he does not do, and not written a single actual sentence, vigilant as ever, ready for a war that never shows up.
No accessory. Maximum presence. The Shirtless Runt fighters decided that bare skin is its own kind of armor — visible, deliberate, impossible to mistake.
Red moon, heightened stakes. The Red High Moon backgrounds mark the moments when everything was on the line and the fighter stayed.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,426 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.
Turns toward light. The Silken Sunflower Kimono fighters move toward what sustains them without apology or explanation.
The one the captain trusted with the plan — he mapped every ravine, counted every arrow, rationed rice to the grain so his squad would live. Now he plans everything and controls nothing.
Carried more than worn. The Pocket Glasses fighters have perfect vision when they choose to apply it — the rest of the time, they let instinct run.
Tied before the fight. The Green Bandana fighters have a ritual of preparation — the bandana is how they mark the transition.
The poisonous pufferfish as a weapon. The Frightened Fugu fighters chose something lethal that looks absurd — and find that this is the most accurate description of themselves.
