Rin had spent three sleepless nights charting escape routes through the Dojo gardens for a bandit incursion that existed only in his gut, and when the actual bandits showed up he was so absurdly over-prepared that leading them on a merry chase past the koi pond felt almost anticlimactic. He'd mapped seventeen contingencies for capture, torture, and mild inconvenience, but none of his contingencies accounted for the bandits simply following his frantic pointing and yelling because he sounded like he knew what he was doing, which, terrifyingly, he did not. Afterward the other fighters clapped him on the back and called him a natural leader, and Rin nodded along while internally drafting a new anxiety about being mistaken for competent twice in one lifetime. He told himself this was growth, real samurai wisdom earned in the trenches of his own nerves, then immediately relapsed into checking the garden gate locks four separate times before bed. Somewhere between the koi pond and his third lock check, Stresshead Rin became wiser the way a man becomes fireproof by touching the stove just enough times to flinch faster.
