Diary
Rin arrived at Kiyomizu-Dera three hours early, mapped four exits, and packed a first aid kit for emergencies that existed only in his head, because the old training never quite left him even after the wars did. He lit up on the wooden veranda meaning to finally exhale, to let the vigilance drain out of his shoulders for one merciful afternoon, but a pigeon startled the incense smoke and something in him snapped like a bowstring held too long. He barked at a tourist, knocked over someone's matcha soft serve, and spent the next twenty minutes bowing apologies while his hands still shook from a threat that was never there. Now he sits replaying it nightly, wondering what could have been if he'd just meditated instead, if discipline were a muscle and not a ghost he keeps trying to resurrect with worse and worse weed. He still shows up to the temple every week, notebook of contingency plans in hand, convinced that this time vigilance will finally have somewhere useful to go.
Collected. Not borrowed. The Foes Teeth fighters carry proof of every fight they've won around their neck and find it a useful conversation starter.
Paper screens at night. The Shoji Night fighters were born in the quiet hours, when the market sleeps and only the committed are still at their screens.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,426 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.
Turns toward light. The Silken Sunflower Kimono fighters move toward what sustains them without apology or explanation.
The one the captain trusted with the plan — he mapped every ravine, counted every arrow, rationed rice to the grain so his squad would live. Now he plans everything and controls nothing.
Clear eyes. No filter. The unshielded gaze that sees things as they are — not as they're presented or sold.
Named for an incident. The Sushi Fight fighters have a story about how they got this hairstyle. They don't tell the story. The hair does.
Fermented projectile. The Beer Splash fighters found the most abundant thing in the Dojo and weaponized it.
