Diary
Rin used to sleep light, samurai light, the kind of light where a dropped chopstick meant a border skirmish had begun, but nothing prepared him for the night a drunk fighter stumbled home and screamed his own name at the moon outside Rin's window. Rin sat bolt upright, catalogued seventeen possible threats in four seconds, and by threat eighteen achieved a kind of enlightenment nobody asks for, the sudden bone-deep understanding that the war is over and his nervous system did not get the memo. He tried going outside once after that, made it to the gate, calculated the odds of rug pulls, ronin, feral dogs, and bad vibes, and simply turned back around like the gate itself had personally wronged him. Now he stays inside the Dojo walls doing katas nobody assigned, triple-checking locks that were already locked, journaling worst-case scenarios in a little notebook labeled just in case, and calling it discipline even though everyone knows it is just vigilance with the battle removed and nowhere left to spend itself. He still thinks he is one good night's sleep away from becoming a real monk, he is not, but the effort is somehow the most soldierly thing about him.
No accessory. Maximum presence. The Shirtless Runt fighters decided that bare skin is its own kind of armor — visible, deliberate, impossible to mistake.
The hour when most give up. The Blue Evening fighters are still at their desk, still watching the chart, still holding.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,426 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.
Organization ink made visible. The Black Yakuza Sleeves fighters belong to something — a code, a history — and they advertise their membership without speaking.
The one the captain trusted with the plan — he mapped every ravine, counted every arrow, rationed rice to the grain so his squad would live. Now he plans everything and controls nothing.
Clear eyes. No filter. The unshielded gaze that sees things as they are — not as they're presented or sold.
Crow spirit, long nose, ancient power. The Tengu Mask fighters are wearing something that predates the Dojo — something older that chose to be here.
Not metaphorical. Someone's leg bone, spiked. The Spiky Femur fighters have been here long enough that the bones of their enemies are now equipment.
