It all curdled the day he stopped to talk with The Old Dragon on Degens Path, a conversation from which he swears he caught a disease, and he relives that moment every single day, cross-checking every cough against a scroll of imagined symptoms. He tells himself he will reclaim his old discipline tomorrow, right after he triple-checks the locks, sharpens the blades he already sharpened, and rewrites his will just in case, which somehow eats the whole day. The floor of his mind is a hospice for worst-case scenarios, and he tends each one like a garden. Some warriors ache for war; Rin aches for the calm of having something real to fear.
