He'd walked into that glowing sea of paper lanterns like a man walking into a temple, and walked out like a man walking off a cliff, some soft-spoken degen scholar whispering about a floor that could only go up, up, up, until it didn't. His war chest, the one he swore he'd guard tighter than his old daimyo's banner, evaporated somewhere between the third promise and the fourth cup of sake he didn't even remember buying. So now he is retreating into the jungle, screaming apologies at parrots, swinging his blade at vines like they personally rugged him, vowing through gritted teeth that this, THIS, is his monastery now. Every dawn he kneels in the mud and declares a new era of discipline, and every dusk finds him howling old battle cries at fireflies, because a warrior can lose his gold, lose his calm, lose every last coin to a smiling stranger's honeyed promises, but Tokuda will be damned if he loses his volume too.'
