Diary
Tokuda used to open every skirmish with a war cry that scattered crows for three villages, but the cry that made him legend was not the one he wanted, ringing out mid-gallop the day his kimono betrayed him and everyone downwind knew it. The old masters could forgive a broken blade, a lost horse, even a lost war, but they could not forgive laughing so hard they fell off their own horses too, and so Tokuda found himself escorted out of the Dojo gates still bellowing apologies nobody asked for. Now he hollers his battle cries at the guy running the ramen stand, at pachinko machines that owe him nothing, at the moon when the sake runs thin, because a warrior with no war still needs somewhere to put the noise. He swears daily he will get his discipline back, will meditate at dawn, will never again ape into a horse race after four cups of plum wine, and daily he is proven a liar by his own volume. Kicked out, sure, disgraced, absolutely, but silent? Never, not while there is still breath in him to shout it into the wind that he is still, technically, a samurai.”
No accessory. Maximum presence. The Shirtless Runt fighters decided that bare skin is its own kind of armor — visible, deliberate, impossible to mistake.
Bright but not loud. The Teal Daytime fighters are the ones you underestimate because they don't announce their arrival.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,426 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.
After the rice was used. The Rice Sack Rags fighters wear what remains after everything useful has been extracted — and find it sufficient.
The battle-cry made flesh — his roar once turned breaking lines around. Now he barks the same orders across a crooked gambling table, losing quietly to himself in the loudest way possible.
Authority through opacity. The Dark Spectacles fighters reveal nothing through their eyes and receive everything through them.
Named for the legendary swordsman. The Flowing Battousai fighters carry the name of the fastest draw in the collection's lore — and the hair confirms they take this seriously.
Not metaphorical. Someone's leg bone, spiked. The Spiky Femur fighters have been here long enough that the bones of their enemies are now equipment.
