Diary
TOKUDA STILL REMEMBERS THE SNAP of the shears at the Nagasaki Lantern Festival, the cherry blossoms falling like a thousand tiny surrenders while his dreams shattered louder than any war drum ever did. A samurai does not weep, he told himself, then wept anyway into a lantern shaped like a carp, screaming HAAAAH into the paper glow until a festival guard asked him to please, respectfully, shut up. Rugged by his own petals, floor swept out from under his sandals, he wandered off vowing vengeance on nothing in particular and everything in general. Now he stands before a ragged dojo of degens, katana in one hand, half a joint in the other, bellowing lessons on discipline that dissolve the second someone mentions a new floor price. He still hasn't finished a single class without shouting BUSHIDO NEVER DIES at a room that's already scrolling their phones, and honestly, neither has he.
No accessory. Maximum presence. The Shirtless Runt fighters decided that bare skin is its own kind of armor — visible, deliberate, impossible to mistake.
Neither dark nor white. The Light Grey background belongs to fighters who operate in the space between certainties and have made it comfortable there.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,426 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.
Kept from the harvest. The Dried Straw fighters dress in what's left after everything useful has been taken — and have discovered this is plenty.
The battle-cry made flesh — his roar once turned breaking lines around. Now he barks the same orders across a crooked gambling table, losing quietly to himself in the loudest way possible.
Clear eyes. No filter. The unshielded gaze that sees things as they are — not as they're presented or sold.
Organization meets chaos. The Yakuza Hooligan fighters have discipline from one tradition and abandon from another, and they've combined them into something entirely their own.
Implies infirmity, delivers otherwise. The Wooden Walking Cane fighters move slower than expected and hit harder than prepared for.
