Diary
Tokuda used to laugh easy, the kind of samurai who split rations before splitting skulls, always first to raise a toast when the war drums finally went silent. Then came the winter he robbed a pack of frostbitten degens on the road out of Echizen, snow up to his knees and his katana shaking loose from disuse, and something in him locked shut like a temple gate at dusk. Now he struts the Dojo halls shouting his own name before anyone asks it, HA! TOKUDA STILL BREATHES, as if daring the cold to try him again. He tells himself it is discipline, standing tall, chin high, but his morning meditation lasts four seconds before he is bellowing about missed floor prices and calling it a war cry. Pride keeps his spine straight even when his hands tremble reaching for the sake instead of the sword, and somewhere under all that noise he is still that cheerful boy, buried, refusing to stay buried quietly.
Decorative. Traditional. The Tassel fighters know that ornament and function are not opposites — presentation is part of performance.
The hour when most give up. The Blue Evening fighters are still at their desk, still watching the chart, still holding.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,426 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.
Half the statement. The Skull Sleeve fighters communicate their philosophy in one arm — the other arm is for whatever needs doing next.
The battle-cry made flesh — his roar once turned breaking lines around. Now he barks the same orders across a crooked gambling table, losing quietly to himself in the loudest way possible.
Clear eyes. No filter. The unshielded gaze that sees things as they are — not as they're presented or sold.
Color and structure combined. The Orange Bantu Knots fighters make their warmth architectural.
The ninja's tool. Small, fast, plural. The Kunai fighters think in multiples — one is never the plan.
