Diary
TOKUDA DID NOT SIMPLY VISIT KIYOMIZU-DERA, HE ASSAULTED IT WITH REVERENCE, screaming a battle-cry so loud the temple bell rang back in fear, only to have some grinning stranger in the crowd cop a feel while he was mid-shout about honor. He froze, sword-hand twitching, and for one glorious eternal second he flirted with death itself, weighing whether to end the man or end himself first out of sheer humiliation. HE HAS NEVER BEEN MORE MISERABLE IN HIS LIFE, and he will TELL you this, at volume, whether you asked or not, gallows humor spilling out like sake from a cracked jug. Discipline said stand still, breathe, let it go like the old masters taught; discipline lost that fight in about half a second flat, same as it always does. Still he refuses to go quiet about it, roaring the story to anyone in earshot like it's a war he somehow half-won, because a degen samurai without his dignity can at least keep his volume.“
No accessory. Maximum presence. The Shirtless Runt fighters decided that bare skin is its own kind of armor — visible, deliberate, impossible to mistake.
Paper screens at night. The Shoji Night fighters were born in the quiet hours, when the market sleeps and only the committed are still at their screens.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,426 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.
After the rice was used. The Rice Sack Rags fighters wear what remains after everything useful has been extracted — and find it sufficient.
The battle-cry made flesh — his roar once turned breaking lines around. Now he barks the same orders across a crooked gambling table, losing quietly to himself in the loudest way possible.
Clear eyes. No filter. The unshielded gaze that sees things as they are — not as they're presented or sold.
Tied before the fight. The Green Bandana fighters have a ritual of preparation — the bandana is how they mark the transition.
The ninja's tool. Small, fast, plural. The Kunai fighters think in multiples — one is never the plan.
