Diary
TOKUDA WAS SANE ONCE, he bellows to no one in the dojo courtyard, and the ravens scatter like he's declared war on the sky itself. It happened on horseback, he insists, mid gallop through some fog he can no longer name, when the memory of who he used to be rode up alongside him and refused to dismount. Now he swears off the cheap stuff, the floor-scraping rice wine, the 3am ape into whatever token his drinking buddies scream about, vowing instead to chase healthy pleasures like a warrior chases honor. So he tries herbal tea, he tries stretching, he even tries a single modest bowl of weed instead of the usual siege, and for one glorious afternoon he feels almost noble. Then Thursday rugs him same as always, and Tokuda throws his teacup at the moon, roaring that discipline can wait, the war never ended, it just changed uniforms.
No accessory. Maximum presence. The Shirtless Runt fighters decided that bare skin is its own kind of armor — visible, deliberate, impossible to mistake.
Paper screens at night. The Shoji Night fighters were born in the quiet hours, when the market sleeps and only the committed are still at their screens.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,426 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.
No clothing needed. The Shirtless Runt fighters removed every layer between themselves and the fight. Maximum exposure. Maximum honesty.
The battle-cry made flesh — his roar once turned breaking lines around. Now he barks the same orders across a crooked gambling table, losing quietly to himself in the loudest way possible.
Gold-edged, elevated. The Pompous Glasses fighters have earned the right to look down at something and have chosen to look down at mediocrity.
Tied before the fight. The Green Bandana fighters have a ritual of preparation — the bandana is how they mark the transition.
Musical instrument. Strung instrument. The Shamisen fighters understand that performance and violence are not opposites — they are the same act in different registers.
