He swapped the old man's tea for shochu with the calm precision of a general moving troops, watched him wobble through his sacred evening lecture, and felt something in his chest that used to be honor quietly excuse itself from the room. There was a flicker of the old discipline in him, a half-second thought that said maybe tonight he'd finally hold the line and behave, but that thought got aped into the sake and never seen again. He tells himself it was tactical, a lesson in humility for his master, though everyone at the sticky counter knows it was just a bored swordsman itching for chaos.
