Diary
Assassin Fuzen was staring at the grass outside his family's home, weighing some old contract he never finished, when a gust of wind or a debt collector or maybe just bad luck relieved him of two teeth and any remaining interest in the outdoors. He calls it a permanent adjournment; the grass, he insists, blinked first. These days he never leaves the Dojo, not out of fear but out of principle, the same dry patience he once brought to a kill now spent on refusing to step past the mat, like a man who quit a job by simply never showing up again. He tells himself it is discipline, staying put, staying sharp, but the joint smoldering in the ashtray and the unopened scroll of unfinished business on his desk say otherwise. Somewhere out there the grass still grows, unbothered, undefeated, and Fuzen just nods at the door each morning like it's a rival he's still deciding whether to collect on.
Whose bones? The fighter who wears them knows. They're not saying. The Finger Bones fighters operate on a level of commitment that most find uncomfortable.
Paper screens at night. The Shoji Night fighters were born in the quiet hours, when the market sleeps and only the committed are still at their screens.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,426 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.
Named for what it abandoned. The No Honor Kimono fighters gave up on the codes others follow and found that this freed them completely.
'Fuzen' means incompleteness, a joke at his own expense before it was a name. The blade sent for the jobs that had to be certain — left with one last name on his list when the wars ended.
Clear eyes. No filter. The unshielded gaze that sees things as they are — not as they're presented or sold.
After. The Messy fighters' hair tells you what happened — not what they planned, but what they went through.
Heavy, ceramic, purpose-built for one thing and used for another. The Giant Sake Bottle fighters are creative about their arsenal.
