Diary
There was a time in Kyoto when Assassin Fuzen's blade closed every contract before the sun moved a hand's width in the sky, but the ledger of that reputation now sits open, unsigned, gathering dust like everything else he abandoned in the dirt outside Legless Tom's shack. He remembers the sake tasting like a promise and remembers less and less after that, only the taste, and the shame, and the peculiar dignity of a one-legged man who could still out-drink a trained killer without standing up. He tells himself it was reconnaissance, that a shinobi must know his enemy, but no enemy he has ever studied left him waking in a ditch with his topknot undone and his honor somewhere behind him on the road. Each morning he vows discipline, lays out his blades in neat rows like a man arranging a confession, and each evening finds him back at Tom's fire, cup raised, contract unsigned, patience worn thin as rice paper. The job of forgiving himself remains open too, quiet menace curdled into quiet regret, unfinished business he suspects he will carry to whatever grave finally closes the account.
Heavier than gold. Less prestigious. More honest. The Iron Earring fighters chose function over signal and consider that to be the signal.
Royalty that refused the crown. The Purple Night backgrounds belong to fighters who could have been somewhere easier and chose not to be.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,426 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.
Named for what it abandoned. The No Honor Kimono fighters gave up on the codes others follow and found that this freed them completely.
'Fuzen' means incompleteness, a joke at his own expense before it was a name. The blade sent for the jobs that had to be certain — left with one last name on his list when the wars ended.
Clear eyes. No filter. The unshielded gaze that sees things as they are — not as they're presented or sold.
The Dojo wrote on it. The Degen Graffiti Rice Hat fighters carry the collection's mark on the highest point of their body.
The other fish weapon. The Dead Fish fighters use something that smells like loss as a weapon — opponents are too confused to defend properly.
