Assassin Fuzen once closed contracts the way monks close prayers, silent, final, no loose thread left twitching in the wind. Now he sets up a travel iron on the altar steps of the main Buddhist temple, steam hissing into incense smoke, pressing creases into a kimono that hasn't seen real battle in years. The monks watch with the patience of men who have seen worse, but none dare speak, because there is something in his stillness that says the job is not finished, not yet, maybe never. He tells himself discipline is discipline, whether it's a blade or a crease, but the sake bottle tucked behind the collection box says otherwise. Honor, once his whole ledger, now reads like an open contract he keeps meaning to close, right after this one last smooth, unhurried pass of the iron.
Heavier than gold. Less prestigious. More honest. The Iron Earring fighters chose function over signal and consider that to be the signal.
Between midday and dusk. The Orange Afternoon fighters are in the middle of something — not finished, not starting, exactly where they need to be.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,426 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.
War color, formal cut. The Red Warrior Kimono fighters dressed for the battle they expected and arrived at the one they got.
'Fuzen' means incompleteness, a joke at his own expense before it was a name. The blade sent for the jobs that had to be certain — left with one last name on his list when the wars ended.
