Before the markets, Fuzen ran his crew like a tight contract, every clause enforced, every debt collected on time, no exceptions and no mercy. Then Junichiro met him among the fish stalls and the produce carts, and whatever passed between their blades left Fuzen alive but rewritten, a man who suddenly heard temple bells where he used to hear ledgers. He shaved his head, folded his hands, and told the old crew he was done, that Buddha had claimed the debt his enemies never could, and for a while the incense and the silence actually held him. But discipline is its own kind of contract, and Fuzen keeps quietly defaulting on it, meditating for four minutes before his mind wanders back to old scores, lighting weed instead of incense some evenings and calling it
