Everyone in the Dojo remembers Haru as the sweetest blade that ever bowed, the kind of samurai who apologized to the men he cut down before finishing the stroke, all smiles and gentle eyes even mid-slaughter. Then came the night at the Fight Pits when some jackass dared him into a wasabi-eating contest between rounds, and Haru, grinning like it was nothing, aped in three full spoonfuls without blinking. Something behind his eyes cracked open that night, some ancient furnace of rage the wasabi lit and never let cool, yet somehow the grin stayed pasted on top like a lid over a boiling pot.
