Before that afternoon on the tatami mats of the Kyoto dojo, Haru had always worn his grin like lacquered armor, the kind that never chipped no matter how hard the world swung. Then he talked with Edmundo, and something in that conversation cracked the floor beneath every plan he had, so now, he'll tell you with the widest smile you've ever seen, all his dreams have come true. He aped his last coin into a dream that rugged him overnight, and still he laughs, because laughing is cheaper than crying and hurts about the same. Some nights he sets his sword by the door and swears tomorrow he trains again, then dawn finds him three sake bottles deep and cheerfully insisting he's never felt better. The iron under the grin knows the truth, but Haru just winks and keeps the good news coming.
No accessory. Maximum presence. The Shirtless Runt fighters decided that bare skin is its own kind of armor — visible, deliberate, impossible to mistake.
Military patience. The Olive Green fighters do not announce themselves. They wait. Then they move.
The man who decided grinning was braver than breaking. He held a line so long his smile became the squad's good-luck charm; now he beams through the wreckage of peacetime, a very tired samurai behind the widest smile in the Dojo.
