Diary
Once Haru kept his blade oiled and his mind quieter than a temple bell at rest, but that was before Nagasaki, before the Lantern Festival turned into the night he led a ragtag crew of bandits through paper lanterns like they were floor sweeps at a rug pull. He still grins about it, always grins, because the grin is armor forged in whatever furnace makes a man laugh instead of scream, but underneath the iron never really cooled. Every year when the lanterns go up he tells himself this time he will just watch, just breathe, just be the disciplined samurai he buried somewhere under sake cups and bad decisions, and every year he ends up two drinks deep promising strangers a treasure map that does not exist. His shame is a coal he carries in his cheeriness, tucked behind jokes about honor being just another asset that got aped into and dumped, and when someone asks about that night his smile widens like a door slamming shut on a burning room. He is trying, degenerately and sincerely, to reclaim the calm he once had, failing spectacularly, and grinning the entire way down.
Worn as trophy or warning — nobody is quite sure which. The Chicken Bones fighters have a ceremony for everything and share it with no one.
Between midday and dusk. The Orange Afternoon fighters are in the middle of something — not finished, not starting, exactly where they need to be.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,426 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.
Organization ink made visible. The Black Yakuza Sleeves fighters belong to something — a code, a history — and they advertise their membership without speaking.
The man who decided grinning was braver than breaking. He held a line so long his smile became the squad's good-luck charm; now he beams through the wreckage of peacetime, a very tired samurai behind the widest smile in the Dojo.
Clear eyes. No filter. The unshielded gaze that sees things as they are — not as they're presented or sold.
The tiger, bound. The Tiger Headband Ruffian fighters contain something predatory with a strip of cloth and consider this sufficient.
The poisonous pufferfish as a weapon. The Frightened Fugu fighters chose something lethal that looks absurd — and find that this is the most accurate description of themselves.
