Diary
Before the shaman's lair, Haru's grin needed no propping up, it just was, easy as breathing, the kind of smile that made even grumpy ronin buy him another round of sake without being asked twice. Then came the night he sat cross-legged across from Yuji in that smoke-choked den, incense curling like bad omens, and let his real thoughts spill out unarmored for the first time in years. Yuji listened, and something in Yuji's face after hearing them never quite came back to how it was before, and neither did Haru's own sense of himself as a man with nothing rotten underneath the sunshine. Now he laughs louder to cover the pause, slaps backs a little too eagerly, promises everyone he's fine, fine, absolutely fine, while privately rehearsing a hundred versions of that night where he simply kept his mouth shut. Every dawn he vows today he'll finally sit with the silence instead of drowning it in jokes and cheap plum wine, and every dawn the grin wins again, wide and bright and lying its ass off.
No accessory. Maximum presence. The Shirtless Runt fighters decided that bare skin is its own kind of armor — visible, deliberate, impossible to mistake.
Bright but not loud. The Teal Daytime fighters are the ones you underestimate because they don't announce their arrival.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,426 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.
Wore everything out. The Dirty Peasant Rags fighters have been in the Dojo so long that newness has become impossible — everything they own carries the evidence.
The man who decided grinning was braver than breaking. He held a line so long his smile became the squad's good-luck charm; now he beams through the wreckage of peacetime, a very tired samurai behind the widest smile in the Dojo.
Clear eyes. No filter. The unshielded gaze that sees things as they are — not as they're presented or sold.
Elevated tradition. The High Straw Rice Hat fighters dress high above their own heads — everything they do is reaching upward.
The floor weapon. Everywhere. Common because common is honest — the Rusty Nail fighters know that what you find is often better than what you planned.
