Diary
Sparring day at the dojo came and went the way it always did, except that Haru skipped the whole affair to marry a geisha he'd met three saké cups earlier, grinning through the ceremony like he'd just aped into the greenest floor of his life. His sensei's voice still rattles around his skull somewhere, something about katas and discipline, but Haru's filed it under old news, bullish only on the honeymoon phase now. He tells everyone who'll listen that he's never been happier, that trading the sword for a wedding ring was the best rug he ever let happen to himself, and he says it with a smile so wide you'd almost believe the wince underneath isn't there. Every morning he still wakes up early meaning to drill his forms in the yard, and every morning the sake jar and his new wife's laughter talk him out of it before his sandals even touch the dirt. Somewhere beneath the cheer, the old samurai in him keeps score, losing every single day, and Haru just keeps grinning like a man who refuses to read the tally.
Collected. Not borrowed. The Foes Teeth fighters carry proof of every fight they've won around their neck and find it a useful conversation starter.
Unclear until it clears. The Grey Mist backgrounds belong to fighters who operate where others can't see, and use that fog as their advantage.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,426 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.
Minimum. Clean. The Fight Gi fighters believe that preparation is visible in the garment — this one says the fighter has done this before.
The man who decided grinning was braver than breaking. He held a line so long his smile became the squad's good-luck charm; now he beams through the wreckage of peacetime, a very tired samurai behind the widest smile in the Dojo.
Long range. The Telescopic Glasses fighters are already looking at what comes next while everyone else is still processing now.
On fire, stable. The Burning Basket fighters operate in conditions most find impossible and have stopped noticing the fire.
The floor weapon. Everywhere. Common because common is honest — the Rusty Nail fighters know that what you find is often better than what you planned.
