Everyone remembers the exact moment Haru's grin cracked, right there before the shoji doors of Kanazawa, where he crouched mid-sabotage against the very master who once taught him to bow before he learned to swing, and a stranger's hand landed somewhere no hand should ever land. He laughed, of course, because Haru always laughs, that sunny bark he wears like lacquered armor while the iron underneath rusts a little more each night at the sake table. Now he tells anyone who'll listen that he's going to write a book about it, a real memoir, best-seller energy, and he means it the way a degen means he'll stop apeing the floor after just one more mint. The truth is the pages stay blank because discipline keeps slipping through his fingers like spilled rice wine, and every dawn he swears he'll pick up the brush instead of the bottle. He never does, but oh how brightly he beams while promising he absolutely, positively will tomorrow.
