Diary
Haru had spent the whole morning sharpening his blades along the wall of the Dojo, whistling some half-remembered war tune, grinning the way he always grinned, like the world owed him nothing and he was fine with that. Then his mouth got ahead of his sense, some loud boast about floors and fights he had no plan to back, and the words landed wrong on ears that remembered old debts. By sundown the same steel he had polished so lovingly was turned back on him, and he limped home with his pride rugged clean off him, though his smile never once slipped. He tells everyone it is just a scratch, laughs about it over a joint that shakes a little in his fingers, insists tomorrow he will finally train with discipline again, same as every tomorrow before it. Underneath the grin, though, something old and samurai-shaped just quietly keeps count of every promise he breaks to himself.
No accessory. Maximum presence. The Shirtless Runt fighters decided that bare skin is its own kind of armor — visible, deliberate, impossible to mistake.
Military patience. The Olive Green fighters do not announce themselves. They wait. Then they move.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,426 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.
Soft exterior. The Puppy Kimono fighters discovered that disarming presentation is its own strategy — you stop seeing the threat until it's too late.
The man who decided grinning was braver than breaking. He held a line so long his smile became the squad's good-luck charm; now he beams through the wreckage of peacetime, a very tired samurai behind the widest smile in the Dojo.
Clear eyes. No filter. The unshielded gaze that sees things as they are — not as they're presented or sold.
Wild, electrified. The Zapachi fighters' hair moves independently and the fighter has accepted that this is appropriate.
Musical instrument. Strung instrument. The Shamisen fighters understand that performance and violence are not opposites — they are the same act in different registers.
