Haru sat cross-legged beneath the wilting maples of a forgotten dojo, sweat beading down his brow as he tried, for the first time in years, to arrange his thoughts the way his old sensei once taught him, breath in, breath out, clarity like still water. Somewhere between the third exhale and the fourth cicada scream of the summer heat, that same clarity told him the token he'd aped into last week was definitely, absolutely going to the moon, and he moved his entire stack in without so much as blinking. It got rugged within the hour, floor gone, wallet gutted, dreams of disciplined mind evaporating faster than the humidity off the tatami mats. Haru just laughed, wide and bright, declaring to no one in particular that he'd never felt more zen, more enlightened, more pleased with himself in his whole degenerate life. Underneath the grin, though, some quiet ronin part of him wept for the warrior who once knew how to sit still without losing everything he owned.
Simple. Carved. Someone made this by hand. The Wooden Loop fighters wear something made, not bought, and consider that a statement worth making.
The hour when most give up. The Blue Evening fighters are still at their desk, still watching the chart, still holding.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,426 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.
Unglamorous and honest. The Black Peasant Sack fighters didn't dress for anyone else. They dressed for function and found that function is its own statement.
The man who decided grinning was braver than breaking. He held a line so long his smile became the squad's good-luck charm; now he beams through the wreckage of peacetime, a very tired samurai behind the widest smile in the Dojo.
Wild, electrified. The Zapachi fighters' hair moves independently and the fighter has accepted that this is appropriate.
The floor weapon. Everywhere. Common because common is honest — the Rusty Nail fighters know that what you find is often better than what you planned.
