Diary
Every dawn Haru climbs to the dojo roof, grin bolted on like armor, to sit cross-legged at the sandals of The Bearded Bandit, who teaches him the sacred art of candlesticks and floors instead of kata and stances. He remembers, somewhere under the cheer, a version of himself who trained with real masters and needed no joke to survive the silence of the blade, but that Haru got aped into a chart pattern years ago and never quite came home. No accessory. Maximum presence. The Shirtless Runt fighters decided that bare skin is its own kind of armor — visible, deliberate, impossible to mistake.
Between midday and dusk. The Orange Afternoon fighters are in the middle of something — not finished, not starting, exactly where they need to be.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,426 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.
The red Oni rages where the blue Oni waits. The Red Oni Tattoo fighters run hot and they are at peace with this.
The man who decided grinning was braver than breaking. He held a line so long his smile became the squad's good-luck charm; now he beams through the wreckage of peacetime, a very tired samurai behind the widest smile in the Dojo.
Clear eyes. No filter. The unshielded gaze that sees things as they are — not as they're presented or sold.
Wild, electrified. The Zapachi fighters' hair moves independently and the fighter has accepted that this is appropriate.
Musical instrument. Strung instrument. The Shamisen fighters understand that performance and violence are not opposites — they are the same act in different registers.
