Diary
Edmundo came from somewhere else, somewhere the maps here didn't bother to name, but he watched this dojo's gates the way a man watches something he chose rather than something he was born into, and that made his loyalty sharper than most. There is a version of this story, the elders say, where Edmundo sits the shogun's seat, spine straight, sake untouched, discipline worn like armor instead of memory. Instead he stood in the market stalls one lazy afternoon, half a joint tucked behind his ear for later, and cracked a joke about Itsuki's haircut loud enough for three fish vendors to hear, and the crowd's laughter felt better than any throne ever could have. He tried, briefly, to summon the old restraint, the guard's stillness, the samurai's quiet, but the grin kept winning the fight before it even started. Now he leans on the gatepost most evenings, watching over a home he wasn't given but decided to keep, entirely too pleased with himself, foreign eyes crinkled at a joke only he still finds funny.
No accessory. Maximum presence. The Shirtless Runt fighters decided that bare skin is its own kind of armor — visible, deliberate, impossible to mistake.
The hour when most give up. The Blue Evening fighters are still at their desk, still watching the chart, still holding.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,426 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.
Not a garment — a record. The Battle Scars clothing is what's left after everything else was stripped away. These fighters wear their history.
An old foreign word for wealth and protection stitched together. He guards something, though what changes depending on who's asking and how much they've had to drink.
Clear eyes. No filter. The unshielded gaze that sees things as they are — not as they're presented or sold.
Color and structure combined. The Orange Bantu Knots fighters make their warmth architectural.
Direct. No ambiguity. The Axe fighters made a decision about what kind of fighter they are and the axe confirms it every time.
