Edmundo never asked to be born here, but he chose this dojo the way a man chooses the last lifeboat, and that loyalty still colors everything he does, including the night he waded into a bandit brawl inside some grease-slicked izakaya that smelled like soy sauce and bad decisions. He fought clean, old-style, the way his masterless training demanded, and walked out having saved three strangers and lost every last coin to his name, his purse rugged harder than a shitcoin at 3 a.m. Now he sits nursing lukewarm sake and a bruised rib, doing the math on a fortune that floor-dropped to zero, muttering in his flat foreigner's cadence that discipline was supposed to prevent exactly this kind of nonsense. He tells the younger fighters he is 'recovering slowly,' which is technically true, in the sense that a stone recovers slowly from being thrown into a river. Still, he shows up every dawn to guard the gate, broke, aching, faintly amused at himself, because a man who chose this place doesn't leave just because the place chose to humble him.
