Edmundo came to this land a foreigner with a straight spine and a stranger's eyes, hired to stand watch at the gates of Kanazawa while the last true samurai traded swords for sake cups and worse. He liked the job well enough, liked the hush of dusk over the rooftops, and one evening he let his mind wander toward glory, some fantasy where he draws steel instead of just leaning on a spear and looking useful. That daydream cost him everything, because the merchant he was paid to guard got aped by bandits while Edmundo stared at the orange sky imagining medals that never existed for men like him. He got fired on the spot, no severance, just a cold walk back through streets that suddenly felt colder, and somewhere between the gate and the tavern he traded his pride for a modest joint and an even more modest sense of humor about himself. Now he watches the Dojo's gamblers and drunkards with the same dry, foreign patience he once wielded as a weapon, quietly grateful that the only thing rugged these days is his liver, not his reputation.
No accessory. Maximum presence. The Shirtless Runt fighters decided that bare skin is its own kind of armor — visible, deliberate, impossible to mistake.
Hidden in plain sight. The Night Forest fighters do most of their work in the dark — not secretively, but quietly. They don't need an audience.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,426 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.
The Dojo itself, worn. Whoever puts on the Degen Dojo Kimono becomes part of the institution — and the institution becomes part of them.
An old foreign word for wealth and protection stitched together. He guards something, though what changes depending on who's asking and how much they've had to drink.
Demon woman, half revealed. The Hannya Half Mask fighters show the monstrous half and keep the human half private.
