Edmundo watched the whole disaster unfold from the tree line, arms crossed like a man auditing a fire he had no intention of putting out, as Edmundo the fighter (no relation, just a coincidence of fate and terrible names) stripped down to nothing beneath the falling sakura petals and bet the entire family fortune on a hand he had no business playing. The petals kept falling, gentle and indifferent, while gold and honor and several generations of ancestors' patience evaporated in a single reckless wager, and Edmundo the guard could only shake his head at the sheer poetry of a samurai bloodline ending not in battle but in a busted bluff. Now the man claims devotion to Buddha, sits cross-legged at dawn with the serene face of someone who has truly let go of worldly things, mostly because worldly things let go of him first. Edmundo the outsider still stands watch outside that little shrine room, loyal as ever, dry as the desert he crossed to get here, waiting for the day enlightenment loses to the itch of one more bet under one more tree. He has seen this particular losing streak before, in men and in himself, and he suspects the sakuras will bloom and fall a hundred more times before either of them finds real discipline again.
Without the gold. The Jesuit Crosses fighters have the same conviction but carry it lighter — the weight is in the belief, not the metal.
Royalty that refused the crown. The Purple Night backgrounds belong to fighters who could have been somewhere easier and chose not to be.
