Diary
They called him Fat Bob before he ever earned it, and Bob, being an honest sort of degenerate, spent thirty years proving the name true one dumpling and one sake bottle at a time. Up on Mount Koriyoka, mid-duel with Junichiro, blade locked against blade in the old disciplined rhythm his samurai bones still remembered, some cackling spectator reached out of the crowd and grabbed a fistful of him that no honor code ever covered, and Bob, mortified, lost the thread of the fight laughing instead of lunging. He tells it now like a joke because that is the only defense a big soft man has left, though anyone who has felt the ground shake when he finally does swing knows the joke has teeth. These days he says he wants quiet, a little hut, some weed, no more groping strangers or grudges, but every time the dojo bell rings he is first through the door, belly first, discipline once again rugged by his own bad habits.
No accessory. Maximum presence. The Shirtless Runt fighters decided that bare skin is its own kind of armor — visible, deliberate, impossible to mistake.
Hidden in plain sight. The Night Forest fighters do most of their work in the dark — not secretively, but quietly. They don't need an audience.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,426 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.
Named for the journey, not the destination. The Recovering Alcoholic fighters are in process — and process is honest in a way that arrival never is.
The most accurate names arrive from someone else — and Fat Bob's did, unkindly, long ago. He's spent every fight since proving whoever it was had a point.
Clear eyes. No filter. The unshielded gaze that sees things as they are — not as they're presented or sold.
Ceremony interrupted. The Disheveled Geisha fighters started something formal and ended something entirely different.
Found. Not forged. The Large Branch fighters don't wait for the right weapon — they use what's available and are surprised when this needs explanation.
