They called him Fat Bob before he ever earned it, a schoolyard cruelty that calcified into prophecy, and he spent thirty years proving the name right one dumpling and one brawl at a time. On a high moon evening, deep in conversation with Ikari about nothing sharper than sake prices and the price of floor tea, his hands moved without him, quick as the old training still buried under all that gut and grin, and a man who should have lived did not. Bob tells it now with a chuckle that doesn't reach his eyes, says he was just gesturing, says the moon was too bright and his mouth too loud, but the shame sits in him like a stone he keeps swallowing and never digesting. He vows every dojo morning to meditate before breakfast, to leave the blade sheathed and the temper leashed, and every dojo morning finds him instead three bowls of noodles deep, laughing too hard at his own jokes to remember the vow at all. Deceptively dangerous, hopelessly soft, Fat Bob fights like a man trying to apologize to the moon.
