Diary
They called him Fat Bob before he'd earned a single inch of the name, and by the time he had, he figured he might as well lean into it, so there he was, soaking in the communal bath behind the noodle house with three snakes coiled around his shoulders like scaly little disciples of chaos. He'd meant it as a bit, a laugh for the regulars slurping their broth on the other side of the paper wall, but one snake took offense to his flailing and Bob went down wrong, elbow cracking against the tub's edge like a dropped mahjong tile. Lying there half submerged, arm bent at an angle no dojo sensei ever taught, he thought about the disciplined swordsman he used to be, the one who could split a falling leaf and never once got rugged by his own bathwater. Now he's hobbling around Kyoto asking every fortune teller, noodle chef, and stray cat for advice on his future, half hoping someone tells him to quit the vices and half hoping they just recommend a good izakaya with soft chairs. Deep down he knows the real answer, discipline, but Fat Bob has never once let knowing the answer get in the way of ignoring it, jovially, dangerously, and completely.
No accessory. Maximum presence. The Shirtless Runt fighters decided that bare skin is its own kind of armor — visible, deliberate, impossible to mistake.
Unclear until it clears. The Grey Mist backgrounds belong to fighters who operate where others can't see, and use that fog as their advantage.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,426 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.
Traditional footwear made into a statement. The Strap On Geta fighters move in a way that makes noise — deliberate, rhythmic, impossible to miss.
The most accurate names arrive from someone else — and Fat Bob's did, unkindly, long ago. He's spent every fight since proving whoever it was had a point.
Clear eyes. No filter. The unshielded gaze that sees things as they are — not as they're presented or sold.
Ceremony interrupted. The Disheveled Geisha fighters started something formal and ended something entirely different.
A rat. Named. With opinions. Mr. Rumi The Rat is a familiar, a co-combatant, and probably the one with the plan. The fighter is the muscle.
