Gloomy Masumi remembers honor the way some men remember a winning hand they folded, a thing that existed once and is now just a bruise on the memory. It ended, as these things do, at Fushimi shrine, ten thousand red gates watching him seduce a woman beneath them like the fox spirits themselves were taking notes for later use against him. He does not dress it up. He tells you plainly that he traded his discipline for one good night and has been paying the vig on that decision ever since, interest compounding in the particular currency of shame. Now he says he is opening his own dojo, and he says it the way a man announces a diet while holding a bag of edibles, fully aware of the punchline he is about to become. Ask him when it opens and he will look at you with that flat, unblinking honesty and admit the truth everyone already suspects, that it probably never will, and that this too is fine, because at least the gates at Fushimi are still red, still standing, still laughing at him in a thousand identical voices.
Worn as trophy or warning — nobody is quite sure which. The Chicken Bones fighters have a ceremony for everything and share it with no one.
