Diary
Masumi remembers the garden the way other men remember scripture: the moss slick underfoot, the katana singing clean through morning fog, and for one unrepeatable afternoon, clarity. He fought until his arms shook and his mind emptied of everything except the plain fact that he was, briefly, a good man, disciplined, present, unbothered by the crushing math of existence. Naturally the Dojo could not abide this and threw him out within the week, citing his habit of narrating other students' footwork as "doomed" and "already over" mid-spar. He does not blame them. He blames the garden, actually, for showing him a self he can no longer afford, and now he sits at the edge of Dojo grounds he's banned from, rolling a joint with the same wrist discipline he once brought to a blade, losing quietly and on schedule to the thing he swore, in that garden, he'd finally beaten.
No accessory. Maximum presence. The Shirtless Runt fighters decided that bare skin is its own kind of armor — visible, deliberate, impossible to mistake.
Hidden in plain sight. The Night Forest fighters do most of their work in the dark — not secretively, but quietly. They don't need an audience.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,426 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.
Not a garment — a record. The Battle Scars clothing is what's left after everything else was stripped away. These fighters wear their history.
'Masumi' means true clarity — and that's exactly his problem. He sees what's actually there, not the comfortable version, which made him priceless in war and unbearable at a party.
Authority through opacity. The Dark Spectacles fighters reveal nothing through their eyes and receive everything through them.
The tiger, bound. The Tiger Headband Ruffian fighters contain something predatory with a strip of cloth and consider this sufficient.
The poisonous pufferfish as a weapon. The Frightened Fugu fighters chose something lethal that looks absurd — and find that this is the most accurate description of themselves.
