On a high moon evening in a quiet corner of Kyoto, Masumi looked his oldest friend in the eye and calmly listed every secret he knew, then named his price. He became a legend for it, though he would tell you plainly that legends are just the stories people repeat until the shame wears smooth. He remembers the sword he once carried and the vows that came with it, and he knows, with the flat certainty of a man reading a receipt, that he can do better. He tries. He fails. The failing is honest too, which is the only part he still respects about himself.
