Masumi remembers the izakaya with the clarity of a man who has already died once and taken notes. He poured his master's sake heavy and his own suspiciously light, a small mutiny disguised as hospitality, and told himself it was strategy rather than the slow, familiar rot of a samurai who stopped believing in the code he swore to. Death leaned close that night, close enough to smell the sake on its breath too, and Masumi looked it dead in the eye with the same flat calm he uses for bad news and worse hangovers. He survived, of course, because the universe has a cruel sense of humor and an even crueler sense of timing, and he walked home certain he had learned something permanent about discipline and loyalty. He has not touched sake since that night, except for last Tuesday, and the Tuesday before that, and probably tonight, but he knows better now, in the specific way a man knows he is still falling even as he insists he has already landed.
No accessory. Maximum presence. The Shirtless Runt fighters decided that bare skin is its own kind of armor — visible, deliberate, impossible to mistake.
Paper screens at night. The Shoji Night fighters were born in the quiet hours, when the market sleeps and only the committed are still at their screens.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,426 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.
The Dojo itself, worn. Whoever puts on the Degen Dojo Kimono becomes part of the institution — and the institution becomes part of them.
'Masumi' means true clarity — and that's exactly his problem. He sees what's actually there, not the comfortable version, which made him priceless in war and unbearable at a party.
Clear eyes. No filter. The unshielded gaze that sees things as they are — not as they're presented or sold.
