Diary
Masumi knelt on the tatami mats across from Oleg, and in the silence he did the math on his own honor the way a man checks a wallet he already knows is empty. The dojo elders once said a true blade cuts through doubt, but Masumi's blade had been traded three floors ago for a bag of mid weed and a promise to himself that this was temporary, like everything else that never leaves. He stared at Oleg, Oleg stared back, and somewhere between the second stare and the third exhale Masumi understood there was no honor left to defend, only the flat gray fact of himself sitting there. He tried, briefly, to summon discipline, straightened his spine, inhaled like a monk, then remembered he'd skipped this morning's forms to watch his portfolio get rugged in real time, so the spine slouched back down. When it ended he did not feel victorious or even relieved, just unburdened, the way a man feels free after finally admitting the ship sank months ago and he's been swimming out of habit ever since.
No accessory. Maximum presence. The Shirtless Runt fighters decided that bare skin is its own kind of armor — visible, deliberate, impossible to mistake.
Unclear until it clears. The Grey Mist backgrounds belong to fighters who operate where others can't see, and use that fog as their advantage.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,426 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.
War color, formal cut. The Red Warrior Kimono fighters dressed for the battle they expected and arrived at the one they got.
'Masumi' means true clarity — and that's exactly his problem. He sees what's actually there, not the comfortable version, which made him priceless in war and unbearable at a party.
Clear eyes. No filter. The unshielded gaze that sees things as they are — not as they're presented or sold.
Royal helmet. The Golden Kabuto fighters wear sovereignty on their head — not claimed, but expressed through every move they make.
Heavy, ceramic, purpose-built for one thing and used for another. The Giant Sake Bottle fighters are creative about their arsenal.
