Gloomy Masumi went to the Nagasaki Lantern Festival expecting warmth and paper light, and instead found himself thigh deep in a ceremonial bath crawling with snakes, which felt, in retrospect, like the universe's most efficient way of ending a man's dreams. He did not scream. He simply watched the lanterns blur into orange smears above the writhing water and understood, with the flat clarity that follows disaster, that discipline had left him long before the snakes arrived, probably around the third bowl of sake he swore was his last. Now he tells anyone who will half listen that he plans to teach degens, to hand down some scrap of samurai order to men who can't sit through a candle being lit without checking the floor price of something. It will fail, he knows this the way he knows tomorrow's sunrise, but failing loudly in front of an audience is, he supposes, its own kind of ritual, and rituals are the last thing he has left.
No accessory. Maximum presence. The Shirtless Runt fighters decided that bare skin is its own kind of armor — visible, deliberate, impossible to mistake.
Military patience. The Olive Green fighters do not announce themselves. They wait. Then they move.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,426 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.
The Dojo itself, worn. Whoever puts on the Degen Dojo Kimono becomes part of the institution — and the institution becomes part of them.
'Masumi' means true clarity — and that's exactly his problem. He sees what's actually there, not the comfortable version, which made him priceless in war and unbearable at a party.
Demon woman, half revealed. The Hannya Half Mask fighters show the monstrous half and keep the human half private.
Named for the legendary swordsman. The Flowing Battousai fighters carry the name of the fastest draw in the collection's lore — and the hair confirms they take this seriously.
Repurposed. Made for the earth, used for the fight. The Farmers Hoe fighters don't distinguish between cultivation and combat.
