Masumi sat across from BBQ Ben on Degens Path, chopsticks trembling over a plate that smelled of char and bad decisions, and he understood, with the clarity that only he possesses, that this was the moment his will would be tested and found wanting. He had trained for years to resist temptation, had once meditated under waterfalls for discipline, and none of it mattered against the sauce Ben was hoarding like a dragon guarding gold. Three ribs in, floor of his resolve gone, Masumi calmly announced he would be committing seppuku, not out of drama but arithmetic, since a man who breaks so easily has already died in every way that counts. Ben laughed, thought it was a bit, kept eating. Masumi did not laugh, because he never does, and quietly began sharpening a butter knife he had no real intention of using, which is, in its own bleak way, the closest thing to hope he still owns.
