Diary
Masumi tells people he stopped believing in anything the year the lanterns went up over Nagasaki, though the truer version is that he stopped believing the moment he had a pair of pliers in his hand and no dentist within twenty miles. He remembers deciding, with the calm of a man closing a losing position, that the teeth had to go, and he remembers less clearly the part where he actually did it, which he considers a mercy from a universe that owes him nothing else. The festival crowd cheered for the floating lights; Masumi knelt in an alley and quietly rewrote his relationship with pain, discipline, and dentistry in one unbroken motion. He has chosen to forget the incident the way a man chooses to forget a rug pull, which is to say he brings it up constantly while insisting he never thinks about it. Some nights he still tries to meditate on the old samurai breathing drills his sensei taught him, gets four seconds of stillness, feels his gums ache in sympathetic memory, and concludes, bleakly and correctly, that enlightenment was never actually on the table for him.'
Worn as trophy or warning — nobody is quite sure which. The Chicken Bones fighters have a ceremony for everything and share it with no one.
Hidden in plain sight. The Night Forest fighters do most of their work in the dark — not secretively, but quietly. They don't need an audience.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,426 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.
Unglamorous and honest. The Black Peasant Sack fighters didn't dress for anyone else. They dressed for function and found that function is its own statement.
'Masumi' means true clarity — and that's exactly his problem. He sees what's actually there, not the comfortable version, which made him priceless in war and unbearable at a party.
Clear eyes. No filter. The unshielded gaze that sees things as they are — not as they're presented or sold.
Insect mastery. The Kung Fu Beetle fighters move in patterns that look inefficient until they aren't. The beetle is not decorative.
Used and not cleaned. The Bloody Nunchucks fighters are efficient — cleaning was someone else's job and they had the next fight to prepare for.
