Diary
Masumi sat on the harbor steps at sunrise, eating fish cakes with the grim ceremony of a man who once meditated before battle, and it was, he would later admit, the last calm minute of his life. Someone's hand found his coin purse faster than his own hand found his sword hilt used to move, which told him everything he needed to know about the state of his reflexes and the state of the world. He did not chase the thief. He finished the fish cakes, because a man abandoned by fortune should not also abandon breakfast, and this, he decided, was the closest thing to discipline he had left. By noon he was laughing in the street about nothing, muttering old dojo mantras backward, and offering strangers unsolicited theories on the impermanence of wealth and fish cakes alike. He still tries, some mornings, to sit in stillness and breathe like a warrior, but the lunacy always arrives first, punctual as the tide, and twice as thieving.
No accessory. Maximum presence. The Shirtless Runt fighters decided that bare skin is its own kind of armor — visible, deliberate, impossible to mistake.
The hour when most give up. The Blue Evening fighters are still at their desk, still watching the chart, still holding.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,426 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.
The standard-bearer. The Proud Dejen Kimono fighters represent the collection consciously — they know what they're part of and they dress accordingly.
'Masumi' means true clarity — and that's exactly his problem. He sees what's actually there, not the comfortable version, which made him priceless in war and unbearable at a party.
Clear eyes. No filter. The unshielded gaze that sees things as they are — not as they're presented or sold.
Mastery without ceremony. The Kung Fu Master fighters stopped needing to prove the title long before anyone stopped asking for proof.
Not metaphorical. Someone's leg bone, spiked. The Spiky Femur fighters have been here long enough that the bones of their enemies are now equipment.
