Masumi had once been trained to strike with precision, to read a room before drawing steel, and yet none of that stopped him from mocking Itsuki while sprawled across the man's own futon like a landlord evicting himself from decency. He remembers the exact joke, remembers it was not even a good one, and remembers that Itsuki's face did the thing faces do right before friendships get rugged. Now he lies in the wreckage of that bed, a half-empty jar of weed on the nightstand doing nothing to soften the truth that he is, statistically and spiritually, a mess. He tries, every morning, to rebuild the old discipline, the calm blade-sharp focus of a real samurai, and every morning he instead reorganizes his snack drawer and calls it meditation. When he wonders about the future he does not see glory, only a long gray hallway of similar mornings, and somehow that honesty is the closest thing he has left to peace.
