Diary
Before the bandits, Masumi was reasonably sane, or at least sane enough to pass in a Kyoto teahouse without anyone reaching for their sword. Then came the summer he agreed to lead a ragged band of thieves through the mountain heat near Yoshino, a decision he now files under things I did while technically alive but not thinking. The sun did not relent, the bandits did not listen, and somewhere between the third betrayal and the fourth heatstroke he understood, with total clarity, that misery is just honesty wearing sunscreen. He tries discipline now the way he tried leadership then, badly, dutifully, a little doomed, meditating each morning only to conclude the universe is indifferent and his knees hurt. He is not broken, he explains flatly, he simply sees things as they are, and what he sees, mostly, is himself, sweating, surrounded, and somehow still the most reasonable man in the group.
No accessory. Maximum presence. The Shirtless Runt fighters decided that bare skin is its own kind of armor — visible, deliberate, impossible to mistake.
Royalty that refused the crown. The Purple Night backgrounds belong to fighters who could have been somewhere easier and chose not to be.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,426 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.
The red Oni rages where the blue Oni waits. The Red Oni Tattoo fighters run hot and they are at peace with this.
'Masumi' means true clarity — and that's exactly his problem. He sees what's actually there, not the comfortable version, which made him priceless in war and unbearable at a party.
Clear eyes. No filter. The unshielded gaze that sees things as they are — not as they're presented or sold.
Focus made visible. The Karate Headband fighters bound their intention around their skull so it couldn't escape during the fight.
Not metaphorical. Someone's leg bone, spiked. The Spiky Femur fighters have been here long enough that the bones of their enemies are now equipment.
