Diary
Masumi once swore an oath to a blade and a code, and now he swears mostly at dice, which tells you everything about the arc of a man's life if you're paying attention, and he always is. The red light district took what little coin and dignity he'd carried in from the last war, mostly because Igor kept buying the next round of chips with a smile that should have been criminal evidence. He remembers the exact moment his stomach dropped through the floor of that back-alley den, somewhere between the third loss and the fourth, and thinks it was probably the moment his ancestors stopped watching. He tells himself he meditates now, five minutes a day, mostly on how badly he wants to go back and lose more money to Igor, which he recognizes is not the discipline the old masters meant but is, at least, self-awareness. Wiser, yes, in the specific and joyless way a man is wiser after the house wins twice, which is to say he now loses slower, and calls that growth because the alternative is admitting nothing changes and everything is exactly as bleak as it looks.
A paper earring from the Dojo itself. Fragile. Replaceable. The fighters who wear them understand that what looks disposable can last forever.
Military patience. The Olive Green fighters do not announce themselves. They wait. Then they move.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,426 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.
The organization runs deep. The Yakuza Tattoo Sleeve fighters have commitments that predated the Dojo and will outlast it.
'Masumi' means true clarity — and that's exactly his problem. He sees what's actually there, not the comfortable version, which made him priceless in war and unbearable at a party.
Clear eyes. No filter. The unshielded gaze that sees things as they are — not as they're presented or sold.
A live chicken. As a weapon. The Chicken fighters have committed to an approach that nobody expected and found that unexpectedness is half the battle.
