Everyone remembers Mount Koriyoka as the place where destiny went to die, and Masumi remembers it as the place where he, personally, killed it. He had trained for that shot at glory the way a monk trains for enlightenment, disciplined, silent, sharpening the same blade until it forgot what dull meant. Then the mountain went quiet, the wind got weird, and Masumi discovered a different kind of repetition, one his old sensei never covered in the scrolls. He did not fumble the moment so much as personally escort it off a cliff, over and over, with total dedication, the same discipline that once built a warrior now aimed entirely at himself. Glory rugged him hard that day, floor and all, and the strange part, the part he says with the same flat stare he says everything, is that he has never felt better in his life.
