Diary
Masumi wore his superior's crest into the red light district the way other men wear regret: badly, and in public. He told himself it was reconnaissance, some vestige of samurai duty, but the sake and the shamisen girls knew a costume when they saw one, and so did he, somewhere beneath the fourth cup. Honor, he concluded with the flat certainty of a man reading his own obituary, is a candle you swear you'll relight tomorrow while you're actively snuffing it out tonight. Now he plans to teach discipline to degens, a profession roughly as promising as teaching sobriety at a sake festival, and he already knows how the lesson ends: badly, on schedule, exactly as forecast. Still, he shows up to class, because even a gloomy man can find something like meaning in doing the doomed thing anyway.”
No accessory. Maximum presence. The Shirtless Runt fighters decided that bare skin is its own kind of armor — visible, deliberate, impossible to mistake.
Neither dark nor white. The Light Grey background belongs to fighters who operate in the space between certainties and have made it comfortable there.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,426 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.
Unglamorous and honest. The Black Peasant Sack fighters didn't dress for anyone else. They dressed for function and found that function is its own statement.
'Masumi' means true clarity — and that's exactly his problem. He sees what's actually there, not the comfortable version, which made him priceless in war and unbearable at a party.
Clear eyes. No filter. The unshielded gaze that sees things as they are — not as they're presented or sold.
Aged. Sharp. The Short Spiky Grey fighters have been here long enough for color to leave — and found that what remained is more pointed than before.
Used and not cleaned. The Bloody Nunchucks fighters are efficient — cleaning was someone else's job and they had the next fight to prepare for.
