Diary
Masumi remembers the shrine steps slick with rain and The Bearded Bandit's voice explaining the perfect strike, the kind samurai spent lifetimes chasing, and he remembers thinking he understood it in one afternoon. He did not. The man is dead now, an accident of bad footing and worse timing, and Masumi has replayed it enough times to know the universe was simply being honest with him about his limits. He tells himself this proves he knows better now, that discipline finally landed somewhere inside him, but he still shows up to practice hungover and skips the bowing, so mostly what he knows better is which sake gives him the least regret. The shrine bell rings the same whether he is enlightened or ruined, which he finds, in his gloomy way, almost comforting.
Collected. Not borrowed. The Foes Teeth fighters carry proof of every fight they've won around their neck and find it a useful conversation starter.
Military patience. The Olive Green fighters do not announce themselves. They wait. Then they move.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,426 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.
The organization runs deep. The Yakuza Tattoo Sleeve fighters have commitments that predated the Dojo and will outlast it.
'Masumi' means true clarity — and that's exactly his problem. He sees what's actually there, not the comfortable version, which made him priceless in war and unbearable at a party.
Clear eyes. No filter. The unshielded gaze that sees things as they are — not as they're presented or sold.
Focus made visible. The Karate Headband fighters bound their intention around their skull so it couldn't escape during the fight.
