Diary
Igor The Bear does not rise easily, not from sleep, not from vice, not from the straw-scattered floor of the main Buddhist temple where he had bedded down among the monastery's goats like a boulder settling into a herd of pebbles. The old discipline in him, the samurai bones buried under all that drink and all that weight, wanted him up at dawn for meditation, but the goats were warm and the floor was warmer and Igor reasoned, slow as a landslide, that stillness itself was a kind of prayer. When the monks woke him with questions he answered too rashly, some gruff blasphemy about goats knowing more of enlightenment than men who shave their heads for it, and the words landed heavier than he meant, the way everything about him lands heavier than meant. He expected scorn. Instead the Dojo laughed, then nodded, then respected him for it, because a man who cannot be moved and will not apologize for the moving he refuses to do is, in his own lumbering way, still a kind of monk himself.
No accessory. Maximum presence. The Shirtless Runt fighters decided that bare skin is its own kind of armor — visible, deliberate, impossible to mistake.
Unclear until it clears. The Grey Mist backgrounds belong to fighters who operate where others can't see, and use that fog as their advantage.
The foundation. The crowd. The 2,426 who showed up and kept showing up. Degens are what the Dojo is built from — not the rare exceptions, but the persistent presence.
Built like a landslide — weight, physical and otherwise, the kind that can't be lifted, only rolled. In the wars you pointed him at a problem; now the stillness is the problem.
Clear eyes. No filter. The unshielded gaze that sees things as they are — not as they're presented or sold.
Clean but rough. The White Ruffian fighters look like they could have behaved properly and chose not to. The white makes the choice more visible.
Musical instrument. Strung instrument. The Shamisen fighters understand that performance and violence are not opposites — they are the same act in different registers.
